How long does a business plan take?

A standard plan takes two to four weeks once the inputs are in hand. The variable is rarely writing speed; it is how long it takes to get complete, consistent inputs.

Typical timelines: financial model alone 5–10 working days; full business plan 2–4 weeks; feasibility study 1–3 weeks; investor plan with model 3–5 weeks. All assume inputs arrive promptly and the scope does not change.

What actually consumes the time

Research. A new sector with thin public data takes longer than a familiar one with visible competitors.

Modelling. A single-revenue business is straightforward. Multiple revenue streams, seasonality, debt schedules and scenarios multiply the work.

Review cycles. Each revision round needs your review, my revision and your confirmation. Two rounds typically add three to five working days in total.

Waiting. The largest and least visible cost. Supplier quotes, lease terms and licence details arrive on other people's schedules.

The dependency chain

StageDepends onTypical duration
Scoping callYour availability30 minutes, usually within 2–3 working days
Scope and quoteScoping call1–2 working days
Advance paymentQuote acceptance1–3 working days
Inputs collectionYou, suppliers, landlord3–10 working days
DraftingInputs7–15 working days
Review and revisionsYour feedback3–5 working days
Final deliveryPayment terms met1–2 working days

The chain is why a four-week plan can become six weeks without anyone working slowly.

How to make it faster

  1. Send supplier quotes and rent figures before the scoping call.
  2. Decide the funding amount and purpose early, and keep them stable.
  3. Nominate one person to give consolidated feedback.
  4. Answer questions in one batch rather than across a week.
  5. Do not change the concept after the draft.

What I will not do

I will not promise same-day or 48-hour delivery. Documents produced that quickly are either templated or unread. If a deadline is genuinely fixed and the scope cannot fit, I will say so at the scoping stage.

How the process works, pricing, and what a plan contains.

That is five to six calendar weeks, not three, because the input stage sits inside it. Founders who already hold quotes and accounts can compress the first two weeks substantially.

What "rush" actually costs

When a deadline is close, something has to give. The options are:

  • Reduce scope — a model and a shorter plan, rather than a full document.
  • Use estimates — clearly labelled, with verification to follow.
  • Parallelise review — the client reviews sections as they are drafted.
  • Add resource — rarely possible for a single-consultant practice.

What does not work is compressing research or skipping the reconciliation between plan and model. Those are the parts that make the document defensible.

Planning backwards from a deadline

Start from the submission date and subtract:

  • two working days for final checks and signatures;
  • three to five days for revisions;
  • seven to fifteen days for drafting;
  • three to ten days for inputs.

If the result is in the past, the scope has to change. Better to discover that on the first call than three weeks later.
